16 Creative Ideas For The Best Easter Ever [even in lockdown]

Stay safe. Stay at home. If there’s anything to abide by this Easter, it’s these two rules. But even though COVID-19 has cancelled the family camping mission and relegated the egg hunt to the balcony, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the long weekend. In fact, with these 16 family-friendly ideas for having fun in lockdown, it might just be your most memorable Easter ever.

Backyard camping

Have camping gear on hand? A patch of lawn? Why not set up a backyard campsite? Make the effort and cook outside on a (contained) fire, take your guitar, gaze at the stars… and try not to go inside the house unless you need to use the bathroom!

Walk every street in your neighbourhood

Exercising is still OK in the time of coronavirus, so how about getting to know your neighbourhood? Take a morning or afternoon stroll with the goal of mapping every street in your suburb, filling in the blanks and discovering spaces you never knew existed. Bonus points for spotting rainbows or bears which kind people everywhere are putting in their windows to entertain the kids.

Go crafting crazy

Most people have a forgotten box filled with craft materials somewhere at home – old crayons, pens, glittery glue, paints and pipe cleaners. If that’s you, assemble the kids and get crafting! Here are 15 sweet Easter-themed ideas.

Plant garlic

For the green thumbs, there’s no better time to plant garlic than Easter. This slow-growing, over-winter crop is as rewarding as can be, providing an abundance of the aromatic kitchen staple – which has some killer health benefits to boot. We love Milkwood’s guide to growing great garlic, so check it out and get planting!

Read a classic

Are there classic books you should have read… but haven’t? Now is the time to grow your brain and burrow into great literature. If it’s already on your shelf, wonderful. If not, try downloading it for kindle, finding a free online version or splurging on Bookdepository. We love this list of The Greatest Books of All Time. Happy reading!

Create a home yoga studio

There are so many amazing yoga resources online like DoYogaWithMe and Yoga With Adriene. Anyone from complete beginner to advanced pretzel can find an appropriate class, so why not create a serene space at home – with low-lighting, plants and warmth – and get your stretch on?

Host a virtual quiz

Do you love pub trivia? What about quiz night? There’s a growing movement of home-based trivia nights, using online tools to recreate the healthily-competitive vibe of your favourite local haunt, at home. If you’re keen to get your mates together for a general-knowledge show-down, this article shows you how.

Bake Gluten Free Hot Cross Buns

We know. The shops are out of flour. Which is even more reason to go gluten free! Try this gluten free Hot Cross Bun recipe – which sidesteps the need for in-demand baking flour – and enjoy a healthier Easter treat.

Call your oldest friends

Now is the perfect time to reconnect with long-lost loved ones. If there are people you haven’t had a chin wag with since high school, take a deep breath and dial their number. They’ll be chuffed to hear from you – and the nostalgia will be positively therapeutic.

Send a letter

Writing letters is back in vogue. Practice your handwriting and pen a long letter to a friend or family member. Stumped by what to include? How about sharing your favourite memory together, what you admire about them, what you hope to do after lockdown, or a big dream you have that you rarely tell anyone about.

Make a snuggly home cinema

Grab as many pillows and blankets as possible and settle in – this is the season to rewatch your favourite films, tackle a trilogy, show the kids some old timey flicks, and get involved in the latest Netflix series.

Hold a photoshoot

Whether you have a DSLR or a dropped-frequently phone, use your time in lockdown to stage a family photoshoot for memories that’ll last a lifetime. Encourage the kids to dress up, go wild with hair and makeup, get the pets involved… be as creative and silly as you please! Once Officeworks is back on the agenda, you can print them out and display a new, totally unique set of family photos on the mantelpiece.

Make a music video

You’ve seen the viral videos. Family renditions of classic hits are all the rage! If you have a guitar, ukulele, drums, a voice or simply a salt shaker, you can make music. Why not teach the kids a favourite hit, add some dance moves and record it for friends and family? If you’re exceedingly brave, you can even upload it to YouTube.

Treat yourself to takeaway

Local cafes and restaurants are still delivering. If it feels like you haven’t had a night out in years, treat yourself to take away from your favourite neighbourhood eatery. You’ll be supporting local businesses when they need it most, too.

Build a cubby house

Kids love cubby houses. Usually reserved for a rainy day, lockdown is the ideal time to teach the kids the Great Art of Cubby Making. With sheets, pegs, chairs and whatever else you have on hand, you can design and build a brilliant play space for children and adults alike. Bonus points for tunnels, nap zones, pet doors, tea sets and fairy lights.

Share your story

Everyone has a story. What’s yours? Arrange a time with someone you trust – whether it’s your partner, parent or old friend – and swap life stories. Tell them about your childhood, favourite memories, times of hardship, secret aspirations and defining moments. If you want to record the audio on your phone or take notes, even better. This is the stuff of life; where you’ve been and where you’re going. Take time to honour the weird and wonderful journey of existence. There’s nothing like being heard; so tell someone your story and listen intently to theirs too.

From all of us at Spinecare, wishing you a happy, healthy, joy-filled Easter – even in this tricky time. We look forward to seeing you and your family in practice after the break.
